Completing the BASEL phage collection

The BASEL collection of phages that infect E. coli has been a valuable resource, but is limited by the peculiarities of the host strain used. Dorentina Humolli, Damien Piel, Alexander Harms and colleagues use a modified host to expand the collection with 36 new phages, revealing key roles of the O-antigen barrier in host recognition and restriction-modification systems in bacterial immunity.

Jan Felix, Savvas Savvides and co-workers reanalyze cryo-EM data to reveal that the dataset includes two distinct populations of 2:1 and 2:2 complexes.

Nonenzymatic IRE1 control of cancer cell cycle

ER-resident IRE1 is known to play a role in cancer development through its enzymatic activation of XPB1 transcription factors and of regulated RNA decay. Iratxe Zuazo-Gaztelu, Avi Ashkenazi and co-workers show that some cancer cells also have an unexpected nonenzymatic dependency on IRE1 to promote cell cycle progression and tumor growth.

Mutations in the SLC13A5 citrate transporter have been linked to epilepsy in humans. Deepika Dogra, Deborah Kurrasch and co-authors generate a new zebrafish model of slc13a5 epilepsy and reveal that in this model, excessive extracellular citrate chelates zinc ions that regulate NMDA receptor function, in turn driving seizures.
